Case Study
Compassion Beyond Cure: Enabling Dignified Palliative Cancer Care
Project Overview
The Kanak Parakh Foundation proudly partnered with Aarambh Foundation to support free, home based palliative care for economically vulnerable cancer patients across the Ahilyanagar and Akola districts of Maharashtra, in collaboration with the Aarambh Palliative Cancer Care Center. This initiative reflects our commitment to ensuring that every patient facing advanced illness receives pain relief, dignity, and compassionate support, even in districts where structured palliative care is almost absent.
About the Receiving Partner
Aarambh Foundation is a registered Section 8 non profit that runs the Aarambh Palliative Cancer Care Center. Founded by Pradeep Kakade, it delivers home based palliative care, counselling, pain management support, and caregiver assistance, entirely free of cost. Aarambh is also a member organisation in the District Committee under the National Palliative Care Program, Ahilyanagar, reflecting its alignment with government healthcare priorities.
What is Palliative Care:
Palliative care is specialised support for people living with serious illness, focused not on cure but on relieving pain, managing symptoms, and providing emotional and psychological care to patients and their families through every stage of the illness.
Project Need
Ahilyanagar and Akola face limited or near absent structured palliative care. Advanced stage cancer patients are often sent home with a diagnosis and little support, left without adequate pain relief or counselling. The initiative aimed to strengthen accessible, community based palliative care for these underserved patients and their families.
Care in Action
Dignified Care at Home : A team of a doctor, a nurse, and a counsellor visits patients who are too weak or too poor to reach a clinic, providing pain relief, wound care, and emotional support.
Pain and Symptom Management: Support with medicines and morphine access facilitation to ease severe cancer pain.
Counselling and Support Groups: Psychosocial support for patients and caregivers, with monthly support group meetings where cancer warriors hold each other up.
Nutrition and Awareness: Daily fruits and strength giving drinks for roughly 100 to 120 patients, alongside community awareness and screening drives.
Our Contribution
The Kanak Parakh Foundation contributed financial support toward Aarambh’s palliative care work, helping fund medicines, medical consumables, and patient support for economically weaker cancer patients across the two districts. Our aim was simply to help Aarambh sustain its services and reach more families with free, dignified care.
Impact
This initiative will help more advanced stage cancer patients receive timely pain relief and dignified care at home, ease the burden carried by their families, strengthen community based palliative care in two underserved districts, and contribute to a sustainable, scalable district level care model for Maharashtra.
